The Godox V1 was a game-changer for my on-location portrait work. The round flash head isn’t just a design choice, it genuinely produces softer, more flattering light than traditional rectangular speedlights.
The Round Head Difference
Most speedlights produce a harsh, rectangular light pattern. The V1’s round head creates a more natural, gradual fall-off that’s immediately noticeable on skin. It’s not a replacement for a proper softbox, but it’s the closest a speedlight has come.
Magnetic Modifier System
Godox’s magnetic modifier system is one of those ideas that seems obvious in hindsight. Snap on a dome diffuser, a color gel, or a grid, all magnetically. No more fumbling with rubber bands or velcro during a fast-paced shoot.
Battery Life
The built-in lithium-ion battery is a welcome upgrade from AA batteries. I can shoot an entire portrait session (200-300 pops) on a single charge, and recharging takes about two hours.
Who It’s For
If you do a lot of on-location portrait work and need a versatile, high-quality speedlight, the Godox V1 is an excellent choice. It won’t replace studio strobes for power, but for run-and-gun portrait work, it’s become an essential part of my kit.
